Aycock Birthplace has gained a reputation throughout its years as an excellent place for school groups to visit and learn more concerning our state's agricultural and educational heritage. Adding greatly to that reputation is the availability of a variety of tours and HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS held throughout the year.

ButtonSeptember, October, November, April, & MayButton

During these months we will be offering a choice of making candles, butter or whizzers for our HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS. Teachers may choose ONE activity and the cost is $2.00 per participant. The visit also includes a regular tour of the historic buildings and an age appropriate orientation program. These workshops will occur on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Wednesdays will be set aside for free living history demonstrations. (Please see attached sheets for the Fall and Spring Living History Wednesdays' schedules.)

ButtonDecember & MarchButton

We will only offer whizzer making hands-on workshops during these two months. On Tuesdays and Thursdays in DECEMBER ONLY, we also will have costumed demonstrations of open-hearth cooking and presentations of 19th century Christmas traditions in the historic home and one-room schoolhouse. There is no charge for the Christmas program without the hands-on workshop.

ButtonJanuary & FebruaryButton

Hands-on workshops for butter or candle making are outdoor activities and will not be offered during the winter months. Regular tours are available. Teachers may reserve a day in the one-room schoolhouse to teach their class a 19th century lesson. Strict rules apply regarding the use of this historic building.
If you cannot come to us, these months are also times for staff members to give off-site presentations to your school.

ButtonJune, July, & AugustButton

We will not offer butter making or candle making during the summer months. Learn what other choices for HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS will be available by phoning the site. There will be a $2.00 fee per participant for each HANDS-ON WORKSHOP. Remember guided tours of the site are free.

ButtonScheduling GroupsButton

To schedule field trips, teachers are asked to contact Aycock Birthplace by calling the site at (919)   242-5581 as early as possible prior to the date they wish to come. We are able to schedule several months in advance. Each LIVING HISTORY activity or HANDS-ON WORKSHOP will last approximately two and one half hours. This includes an orientation program, a guided tour of the historic buildings, the HANDS-ON or LIVING HISTORY activity, and a visit to the souvenir shop. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE LUNCH TIME, AND IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOUR GROUP ARRIVE AT THEIR SCHEDULED TIME. Also, let us know if your class has any special needs.
When requesting the HANDS-ON WORKSHOP, each teacher may choose one activity for their class. If several classes are coming from the same school, each teacher can pick from the two activities for their class.

WE WOULD LIKE FOR EACH GROUP TO HAVE ONE ADULT FOR EVERY TEN STUDENTS. DISCIPLINE DURING THESE VISITS IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE TEACHERS OR SUPERVISING ADULTS. There may be more that one school on site on a given day. It is advisable to have the students wear name tags.
