March 8, 2000


The Wayne Information Network met on March 8, 1999 at 4:00 PM in a meeting room in the building housing the library of Cherry Hospital. Marie Edwards provided refreshments and welcomed the members to Cherry. The following were in attendance.

Members were welcomed by Marie Edwards. The meeting was called to order by Cliff Rhodes, chair.  A welcome was extended to Margaret Slade from Seymour Johnson AFB.
 
 

Business Meeting




Editorial corrections were made to the minutes of the August meeting and they were approved.

Old Business:

Work continues on the Wayne County Union List of Serials. Rhodes asked that all corrections/additions be set to him by 15 Dec. Robby Price of W.T. Cox Subscriptions Inc. will make the data available on a web page and a link will be provided from the WIN pages. This product provides valuable data to locate journal articles within the county.

What's News and Views

Wayne County Public Library:
    1. Remote access to NCLIVE from the Wayne County Public Library will be available soon. There were some technical problems that have been overcome.
    2. Staff training to use NCLIVE has been provided to two employees in each department who, in turn will provide assistance to patrons.
    3. The question was asked concerning an age limit to receive a password. At this time all patrons who are eligible for a library card may have a password.
Wayne County Public Schools:
    1. Paul Waters introduced the new online services to public schools, NC Wise Owl. After watching the video, handouts were provided. With four areas, resources are provided for students, teachers, parents, and general reference. Once a school library has the account installed, students will be able to access it from other locations where Internet access is available, including the public library. http://www.ncwiseowl.org is the web location. This has been funded for this year with $400,000 from the Technology Literacy Grant received by the state.
    2. One section, Carolina Clips, highlights each county in the state with student articles and pictures. Wayne County needs a contribution and all members indicated support for the project to Waters.
East Carolina University
    1. Diane Kester reported that the MLS program along with the Instructional Technology program continues to provide courses delivered via the Internet. Http://www.soe.ecu.edu/lset. She also announced that the service known as EastNet has changed. Services to the public schools will continue to carry the name, EastNet, and will be placed under the Center for Educational Outreach. Dial-up access to the Internet through ECU will end by June 30, 2000.
    2. The Southeastern Regional Technology and Teaching Conference will be held April 12-14, 2000 at the Hilton and Ramada Hotels in Greenville. http://www.soe.ecu.edu/srttc will provide full information.
    3. The Center for Children's Literature, Joyner Library, East Carolina University will present Tall Tales and Homespun Yarns with Donald Davis on February 11, 2000. Announcements The Public Library Association will hold its national conference in Charlotte March 28-April 1, 2000. http://www.pla.org for details.

The State Library is initiating a program to promote libraries for children. Libraries, The Very Best Place to Start will hold a "kick-off" on April 8, 2000. The Very Best Place To Start: Communications and Marketing for Library Services to Children and Teens is a strategic communictions initiative designed to equip North Carolina's library leaders with the tools, training, and means to talk about library services to children and teens in language that resonates with the general public and key stakeholders. Regional meetings will be held with one in Washington on February 1, 2000.
 
 

Book sharing

Discarded books were available for other libraries.

Members expressed their appreciation to Marie Edwards for the refreshments and the meeting adjourned for a tour of the library.
 

The next meeting will be at 4 PM on March 9, 2000 at Southern Wayne High School Media Center.
