The meeting was called to order by Gary Barefoot, chair. A welcome
to the Wayne Co. Public Library was extended by Jeff Cannell, library director.
Gary welcomed new member Susan Ryberg, Mount Olive College, and guest,
Brenda Ingram, Johnston County schools.
Business Meeting
Gary expressed concern that several of the fax notices did not go through,
including one to WGBR. A poll at a previsous meeting indicated that this
would be an acceptable method of announcing meetings. Mount Olive's
e-mail system is temporarily out of service.
Minutes of the previous meeting are available online at http://www.esn.net/win/11-18-97.htm.
Announcements
-
Gary gave an update concerning library services at Seymour Johnson Air
Force Base. Kay Baumwart has been reasigned overseas. No one is being appointed
to serve the patrons at the base. This is consistant with the government's
downsizing on military bases.
-
Jeff had been approached by the Air Force about creating a public library
branch on the base. The initial offer contained no monitary support for
the library. Gary's primary concern for the local libraries was the ProQuest
collection currently owned by the base library. The subscription has not
been renewed; therefore cutting off interlibrary loan service for articles
in this collection.
-
A discussion was held as to the possibility of the WIN consortium taking
over the current collection for $250/year, charging $.10 per copy for a
closed collection. Gary will continue to hold discussions with ProQuest
about this situation.
-
Library service on base will also be a concern since several institutions
are reviewed by SACS and depend upon the base library for services. Gary
will check with the base Education Officer.
-
Olivia offered to bring the situation to the attention of the Military
Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Commerce; Gary and Jeff will attend
also.
-
Shirley invited librarians to attend the ribbon cutting for NC-LIVE
(http://statelibrary.dcr.state.nc.us/ncslhome.htm)
during National Library Week.
-
On April 20, 1998, at 4:15 PM, the ribbon cutting ceremony will be held
in the library at Wayne Community College. North Carolina Community
Colleges President Martin Lancaster will conduct the ceremony.
-
A demo version of NC-LIVE is currently available.
-
Shirley led a discussion of the changing role of all types of librarians
as patrons need more instruction on using the tools and resources available
electronically.
-
Jeff distributed the brochure on the Wayne County Public Library Renovation
& Expansion Project and explained the plans to increase space for the
local history section as well as the reading room.
What's News and Views
-
Gary distributed the Spring 1998 Serials List for Moye Library, Mount Olive
College
-
Shirley distributed a list of discarded materials available to other libraries.
[See list at end of minutes.]
-
Olivia announced that Sirs: Discoverer has been placed in
all elementary schools, Super Tom in all middle schools,
and Super Tom Plus in all high schools.
-
Shirley asked about the policy for school libraries to update encyclopedias.
Dixie reported the selection policy at the schools provides for a rotation
by title update with editions over five years old being re-assigned to
classrooms.
-
Bonnie Whitesell complimented the public library on its service to school
students.
-
Shirley announced that the web
pages for the WCC library have recently been updated, providing links
to local and Internet resources.
The meeting was adjourned.
The next meeting will be at on May 14, 1998, possibly at the new Carver
School in Mount Olive.
