The Wayne Information Network met on March 17, 1999 at 4:00 PM in the
media center of Goldsboro Middle School, Ramona Dunkley, hostess.

Jim Whalen and Kevin Harden are no longer at WCPL.
After a period of refreshments and informal person to person networking,
the meeting was called to order by Gary Barefoot, chair. A welcome
to Goldsboro Middle School and the media center was extended by Ramona
Dunkley, media coordinator.
Business Meeting
Gary expressed a continuing concern about communication with members
about meetings. Individual e-mail addresses are being established for the
school media coordinators and efforts will be made for the next meeting
to give more advanced notice. Diane asked to be notified of personnel and
e-mail changes.

Announcements

Gary had been prepared to introduce the new librarian at Seymour Johnson
Air Force Base Library, Chris Jones; however, Mr. Jones was unable to attend
this meeting.

Gary introduced the new director of Wayne Public Library, Jane Rustin,
who thanked the members for her warm welcome to Goldsboro and Wayne County.

Bonnie complimented the public library's web pages, especially the links
to government documents.

Gary reported on the progress of the WIN Union List of Serials. He
has received some updated information from the individual libraries but
would like the other updates by mid April. If a library has a broken
lot of a title, he suggested checking with other libraries to fill in their
run.

If any library would like the list of titles that are indexed in NCLIVE,
Susan has that available on a disk.
What's News and Views - Gary took a poll of the group for library
activities and updates.

Gary distributed information about the MOC online catalog, MOOPAC.
The URL is http://www.mountolive.edu/Academics/Moye/moye.html
. A person may search by author, title, LC subject heading, or keyword.
Use of punctuation, including dashes, sometimes are "less-than-successful."

Three more terminals for NCLIVE and Internet use have been purchased through
a grant from the state library.

Gary announced that he has submitted a letter of retirement after this
semester. He is looking forward to retirement.

Wayne Community College
-
Judy reported that she has been updating the serials holdings at WCC for
the Wayne County Union List of Serials.

Twenty four computer stations are now available in the library for student
use. The library was successful in their applications from grants
available through the State Library.

Susie has been weeding the audio-visual collection, reviewing the reserve
collection, and providing student assistance. Several schools have
visited the library this spring.

Wayne County Public Library
-
Jane announced that the library would be closed soon to allow for the installation
of upgraded public access terminals.

Also, the fiction collection will be re-integrated after having been separated
by genre for some time.

Goldsboro Middle School
-
Ramona reported that the school has installed the network with access in
every classroom, 30 stations in a lab, and 3 stations in the media center.
A faculty AUP has been adopted and the faculty is discussing acceptable
use policies by students.

Wayne Country Day School

Bonnie announced that the school is not completely wired and now they are
working on acquiring the hardware and server for a network.

Cherry Hospital
-
Marie announced that the library at Cherry Hospital now has a part-time
assistant. This has freed her to work more with services to patrons across
the campus.

A Y2K coordinator has been hired to assure Year 2000 compliance of all
computers at the Hospital.

Wayne County Schools
-
Olivia announced that there will be two new schools in August, Rosewood
Elementary School and Spring Creek Elementary School. The current Rosewood
Elementary will become the Rosewood Middle School.

E-rate application has been approved moving the schools to 70% completion
of the LAN within 5 months. This will provide 5 drops per classroom.
The schools are investigating leasing of hardware.

The Y2K study is underway. The MLC company from Greenville is working
with them.

An allocation of $150,000 for upgrading the book collections has been made.

Olivia distributed bookmarks for the Wayne County Public Schools web page.

Diane announced the Southeastern Regional Technology and Teaching Conference
March 24-26th at the Hilton and Ramada Inn in Greenville.

She also announced the retirement of Dr. Gene Lanier on 1 July.
Discussions
-
A lengthy discussion was held on acceptable use at Internet workstations
and providing of guidance for student use. Susan has found through
experience that individual logins is one way to monitor use.

Gary appointed Marie Edwards and Ramona Dunkley to serve on the Nominating
Committee. Nominations for chair and for recorder will be voted upon
at the May meeting.
The meeting was adjourned.
The next meeting will be at on May 13, 1999 at the public library.
