MINUTES
May 8, 1997

The Wayne Information Network met on May 8, 1997 at 5:00 PM at the Wayne County Public Library in the North Carolina History Room.  In attendance were:
Bonnie Whitesell, Wayne Country Day School;
Pam Wood, Mount Olive College;
Ramona Dunkley, Goldsboro Middle School;
Marie Edwards, Cherry Hospital;
Judith Williford, Rosewood Elementary School;
Jim Whalen, Kevin Harden, and Donna Phillips, Wayne County Public Library;
Kathleen Baumuart, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Library;
Paula Waters, Edgewood Community Development School;
Sandra Jones, Belfast School;
Susan Parris, Donna Potter, Judy Hodges, Dot Elledge, and Shirley Jones, Wayne Community College.

The meeting was called to order by Bonnie Whitesell, chair.  A welcome to the Wayne County Public Library was extened by Jim Whalen and Kevin Harden.  They introduced the new children's librarian, Donna Phillips.  Donna announced that the summer reading program begins June 16th and runs for six weeks.  It is anticipated that 750 children will attend.  Get Cooking with Books is the theme this summer.  Flyers were distributed.

Minutes of the previous meeting were posted on the WIN pages.  Members were asked to e-mail any corrections to Bonnie Whitesell.

Nominations for chair for the next year were made from the floor.  Pending acceptance by one of the nominees, Gary Barefoot, Jim Whalen, and Gayle Keresey, the election was postponed.

Old Business

  1. The group expressed appreciation for the follow-up sessions from the last meeting concerning updating Internet software.  Sessions were conducted by Gayle and Diane at Wayne Community College.  A repeat of the sessions was requested by those who could not attend.
  2. Sharing of Internet resources.
  3. Wayne Community College was discarding several reference resources and offered them to members.
  4. Serials Directory.  The Update of the WIN Serials Directory was distributed by Pam Wood.  It includes 1,500 + titles.  Shirley Jones is to make copies for non-public school libraries and Olivia Pierce is to make copies for the public school libraries.  Distribution is to be made before the closing of the school year.
 

New Business

  1. Pam Wood announced that the Moye Library of Mount Olive College has selected SIRS/Mandarin as its automation system.
  2. Bonnie Whitesell announced that Grolier Academic American 1994 or 1995 edition at a reduced rate. She encouraged members to continue the spirit of sharing resources, especially in light of tightening budgets.
  3. Jim Whalen announced that the Law Library has moved to 100 Ormond Avenue. Additional CD-ROM purchases have been made.  The hours of operation are 9-5 Monday through Friday.  Marshalle Becton is the paralegal on staff and can be contacted at 731-1457 in the County Manager's Office.
  4. Wayne County Public Library is experiencing the need to expand, especially the local history and reference sections.
Program

The tour of the Wayne County Public Library was conducted by Kevin.  Highlights included the Best Seller Express (rental by the week of best sellers, a project of the Friends); Newsbank, Grolier's 97 Encyclopedia, Phone Disc Listing for the US.  The Friends provided an Internet workstation with an account from ICCON.  A policy statement must be read by the patron before signing in for use.  A one hour limit has been established.  Printing charges are $.15 for black and $1.00 for color printing.  A new word processing station has also been added.  Other areas of interest were the foreign language books and the education/career center.  Karen, the new reference librarian, was introduced.

Bonnie Whitesell thanked the Wayne County Public Library for hosting the meeting.  The next meeting is scheduled for August with details to be announced. Bonnie, as outgoing chair, thanked the members for the opportunity of serving this year.

The meeting was adjourned for a Chinese dinner in the North Carolina History Room.
The next meeting will be at 4:00 P.M. on August 26, 1997 on the mezzanine of the Wayne Community College. Library.
