Program
Dr. Jones welcomed the members and introduced the guest for the afternoon, Michael
Schultz. Mr. Schultz has been in the area for 10 years and now manages MCS Computers,
Inc. He presented information about their new telecomputing service. Beginning
August 1, users can call into MCS Computers and connect to the Internet. The company will
be concentrating on the end users, providing training and services. In September they will
expand services to the business community.
With a local call or leased line, users can establish a PPP access providing the capability
to use e-mail, WWW, IRC, FTP, and telnet. Software is included. Fees are currently $20 for
40 hours per month and 50 cents per hour for additional time. The modems handling
incoming calls are currently 14.4 baud but will be upgraded to 28.8 baud soon. Their
computer can handle 1000 connections at a time with the current capacity of 32 lines for customers
and 5 lines for in store use. Other services of MCS Computers are the repairing of equipment and
upgrading of computer systems. Charge for in store repairs is $40 / hr. and for on site visits,
$50 / hr. The company is concentrating on service for Wayne County but will be expanding the
market in the future.
General questions and answers followed Mr. Schultz's presentation. Concerns were expressed
about the cost of connecting with commercial services such as America Online and cost of phone
calls to regional services such as EastNet. The MCS Computers would provide a T1 line
connectivity enabling routing to other services with a local phone number. Olivia Pierce reminded
the need for parents and students to sign a release form before allowing student access to full
Internet activity.
