Wayne County, North Carolina
Minutes
August 17, 2000
The Wayne Information Network met on August 17, 2000 at 4:00 PM in the Moye Library of Mount Olive College. Susan Ryberg, Pam Wood, Gary Barefoot, and Gwen Cox provided refreshments and welcomed the members to the library. Others in attendance were: Terry Beckwith, Wayne County Public Library; Dot Elledge, Wayne Community College; Judy Hodges, Wayne Community College; Shirley Jones, Wayne Community College; Susan Parris, Wayne Community College; Olivia Pierce, Wayne County Public Schools; Cliff Rhodes, Wayne County Public Library; Paula Waters, Rosewood High School; Bonnie Whitesell, Wayne Country Day School; and Judith Williford, Rosewood Elementary School.
Members in attendance introduced themselves and told their place of work.
The minutes were read and approved with one correction. On the first page it should read Jane Rustin, Director instead of Directory.
Old Business:
Cliff Rhodes mentioned that the Wayne County Public Library was glad to have hosted the last meeting so members could remember what the library used to look like. Renovations are coming along nicely.
Cliff Rhodes has talked to Robbie Price and there has been no progress on the Win Union List. Since Robbie is no longer with W. T. Cox Cliff will talk to someone to see if the list is feasible. Olivia Pierce will contact Robbie and talk to him.
As NC LIVE continues to be a favorite members discussed experiences. Cliff said the public library password changes are available but communication is a problem as patron’s email addresses change. Susan Ryberg said Mount Olive College has a draft notice which tells students to go to the home page for instructions. Dot Elledge said Wayne Community issues a password after the patron has read the agreement and it is verified that the person is a student.
Cliff announced that The Wayne County Public Library has two new computers available for JOBLINK, which has benefited the patrons. The Gates Foundation has awarded a grant for four computers for the main library and two per each branch. One of the two computers in each branch will be in Spanish.
We need to coordinate the web pages of WIN members. Susan Ryberg is the volunteer coordinator of the WIN web sites. We need to look at our web pages and do clean up. Cliff expressed the wish for a handicapped accessible web page. There is a site where you can submit your URL and it will analyze it for accessibility by the visually impaired.
New Business:
Olivia Pierce shared information about the distance learning coordinated effort. This is made possible by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. The classes have a facilitator who is non-certified. This facilitator downloads the lesson plans, takes up pages and sends in grades. Paula Waters mentioned that at her school students have access to classes that they would not ordinarily be able to take. Also, students are carefully screened because the classes are expensive. If the student quits or fails money must be refunded.
Announcements:
Dot Elledge announced that Wayne Community College is no longer on Dynix. They are now on SIRSI which is web based. She distributed directions for getting into the WCC catalog.
Pam Wood reminded people that statistics are available on NC LIVE.
