MINUTES
August 26, 1997
The Wayne Information Network met on August 26, 1997 at 4:00 PM on the
mezzanine of the library at Wayne Community College. In attendance
were:
Bonnie Whitesell, Wayne Country Day School;
Susan Parris, Donna Potter, Judy Hodges, Dot Elledge, Anne Croom,
and Shirley Jones, Wayne Community College
Pam Wood and Gary Barefoot, Mount Olive College;
Marie Edwards, Cherry Hospital;
Priscilla Best, Meadow Lane Elementary School;
Linda King, Charles B. Aycock High School;
Gwen Shipman, Goldsboro High School;
Rachael Kennedy, Southern Wayne High School;
Katherine Wood, Eastern Wayne High School;
Kevin Harden, Wayne County Public Library;
Diane Kester, East Carolina University; and
Dr. Dan Krautheim, guest, Wayne Community College.
The meeting was called to order by Bonnie Whitesell, chair. A
welcome to the Wayne Community College was extended by Shirley Jones, who
then introduced the new Vice-President for Academic Affairs and Student
Services, Dr. Dan Krautheim. Dr. Krautheim extended his welcome and
heard members express their praise of the work at Dr. Shirley Jones has
done to promote cooperation among the libraries of Wayne County. She has
been instrumental in forming and receiving the support of the WCC Foundation
for establishing the services of WIN.
Business Meeting
Bonnie polled the members present as to the best method of communication
about meetings. E-mail and fax seemed to be sufficient.
Diane gave a brief history of WIN and challenged the members to look
towards future endeavors.
Minutes of the previous meeting were summarized by Bonnie. They are

Minutes were approved as written.
Old Business

Pam Wood announced that the Moye Library of Mount Olive College has installed
SIRS/Mandarin as its automation system. The catalog will be accessible
from a web page. Gary invited everyone to their "bar party" when the bar
codes and security strips will be installed on the library books.

Nominations chair of WIN were re-opened. Linda King nominated Gary
Barefoot. Rachael Kennedy seconded the nomination and moved to elect
Gary by acclamation. The motion carried. Gary expressed his
appreciation and expectations of the full cooperation of all the members
to make it a meaningful year.

Wayne Community College was discarding several reference resources and
offered them to members.

Serials Directory. The WIN Serials database is in Claris Works.
Diane was asked to explore with Cox and with Entersoft the possibilities
of making this available on the web pages.
New Business

Acceptable Use Policies. Reports were given by members concerning
policies that are being written for use of the Internet in libraries.

The public schools have a School Board approved policy that includes a
letter to parents requesting a signed copy be returned to the school.
They use of the Internet is designated for school assignment use only.

Bonnie expressed concern with student use of e-mail, especially students
who have met other students across the state.

Kevin reported that the Wayne County Public Library has their AUP in place.
The guidelines are posted on the sign-up sheet next to the Internet workstation.
A one hour time limit has been established and users must be at least 13
years old.

Mount Olive College is just connecting the online catalog which will be
accessible from the Internet. They do not have a written policy at
this time.
Program

The staff of Wayne Community College Library conducted a tour of the newer
services available in the library.

NC LIVE,
a project of the NC State Library, was demonstrated by Susie. Shirley explained
that the links are up on a trial basis for several online indexes, including
EBSCO. There is a link to NC LIVE from the web pages of WCC Library,
http://www.wayne.cc.nc.us/library/wcclib2.htm, by going to North Carolina--The
State Library of North Carolina--Hot Topics for Libraries.

Dot distributed new instructions for accessing the WCC Library Catalog
and explained the new options for users, especially the ability to place
a hold on a title.

Donna distributed applications for a WCC Library card so that librarians
could take advantage of the new options.

Bookmarks with WCC Library Facts and Figures were distributed and are available
to be placed at other libraries.
The meeting was adjourned for a dinner at the China King.
The next meeting will be at on November 13, 1997 hosted by a special
library, possible the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Library.
